Commemorate Hiroshima at the Aberdeen CND gathering in Union Terrace Gardens on Sat 6th August at 2pm.

This year Aberdeen Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) will be holding their annual gathering to commemorate Hiroshima Day on Saturday 6th August at 2.00pm, in Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen. 

The rules of the garden do not allow  organised speakers but there will be two minutes silence at 2.30pm when, weather permitting, those attending and able, will be asked to lie down.

One of the organisers, Jonathan Russell said, "We encourage you all to come along with your family and remember the families who died on that day in 1945. 

"Bring flowers and candles so that we can make a peace symbol. 

"Come along with musical instruments to play appropriate music and a picnic so that you can sit awhile afterwards."

Please come along to the next meeting of the ATUC on Wed 4th May

The next meeting of Aberdeen Trades Union Council will be held on Wednesday 4th May at 7.30pm at John Londragan House, 22a Adelphi, Aberdeen.

There is the usual packed agenda and the meeting will begin with a presentation from Renee Slater on the Aberdeen Festival of Politics.

All affiliates and associates are welcome to attend. The agenda and minutes of the last meeting will be circulated soon.

Go along to Aberdeen's "bigger and better" Festival of Politics 2016

Aberdeen's Festival of Politics for 2016 will run from 23rd March to 3rd April. The event is open to all, and women and  trade unionists are especially welcome.

Events likely to be of particular interest to ATUC members are the Evening with Anne Begg on Thurs 24th March at 19.00 in the Belmont Filmhouse Cafe Bar, and the Big Debate with Bonnie Greer, Heather Wakefield (Unison), Dr Lesley Orr (feminist theologian) and Belinda Brown (writer for Conservative Woman) at 3pm on Sunday 3rd April.

It would be great to see a good audience for Anne Begg. That's going to be a Parkinson-style interview followed by questions from the floor.

Successful Festival of Politics gives Citizen-Eye-View of Scotland’s future

Aberdeen’s first Festival of Politics was described by organisers and those taking part as “incredibly successful”, giving a Citizen-Eye-View of Scotland's future after the Referendum vote in September of this year.

Thanking all those involved for their hard work during the week-long Festival, organiser, Renee Slater said, “I'm sure everyone will agree that whatever the outcome of the referendum, Scotland will certainly be a very different place. The Festival provided a great opportunity for the people of the North East to get involved in the debate”

However, she criticised the refusal of the press to cover the Festival. “It seems they will only talk to politicians and a unique event organised by ordinary people didn't merit a column inch in most of the local media. This is a real shame”

Aberdeen Festival of Politics - A Unique Event



The Aberdeen Festival of Politics will kick off on Monday 24th March with a showing of two films, City Without Class, a short film about Aberdeen made by local film makers, and The Happy Lands, a powerful film set in the mining communities in Fife during the General Strike of 1926.

It will end with a Big Debate on the Independence Referendum on Sunday 30th and with an Economics Debate on Monday 31st March.

Organiser, Renee Slater said, “This is a unique event in Scotland. We are in an important year for our country. Whatever happens here after the referendum, Scotland will certainly be a different place.
