ATUC in action at the 121st STUC Congress

The 121^st STUC Congress was held in Aviemore between 16 April and 18 April 2018. ATUC had three delegates - Tyrinne Rutherford, Fiona Napier and Kathleen Kennedy as delegation leader. The delegation had a very busy successful Congress this year.

Kathleen Kennedy, delegation leader said, “I think we thoroughly enjoyed it and we worked well as team."

ATUC had submitted three motions. Two were composited and one stood alone. All were approved.

Our 3 motions were

• Organising in Hospitality
• End Israeli apartheid and the detention of Palestinian Children
• Scotland is not just the Central Belt

Fight against zero hours, zero rights, zero respect workplaces.

Young Unite activist, Chris Trestrail has organised Aberdeen's first Better Than Zero meeting on 30th September in the Belmont Cinema at 6.30pm.

Chris said, "This is a real chance for us to grow a solid and active socialist youth movement in the city. Please come along and join us to plan local events."  

Chris added, "The Better than Zero campaign is a group of young trade unionists, precarious workers and creative campaigners who are fed up of bad bosses who think they’re beyond reproach. We want to fight back against the bullies, and use the skills in a collective project against zero hours, zero rights and zero respect workplaces."

Aberdeen stands with the workers of Sports Direct - come to the demo on 6th Feb.

Aberdeen Trades Union Council has pledged support for a demo on Saturday 6th February 2-3pm, organised by young workers against zero hours contracts and Sports Direct's exploitative and unfair use of them.

City Link sackings “disgraceful” says Aberdeen TUC

Aberdeen Trades Union Council (ATUC) has added its voice to the widespread condemnation of City Link bosses who sacked thousands of workers during the festive period.

At its first meeting of 2015, delegates from affiliated unions called for the nationalisation of City Link to protect all jobs and pledged support for City Link workers.

Scott Sutherland, of Unite the Union and an ATUC delegate said, “The actions of City Link bosses in sacking thousands of workers, especially at this time of the year, is nothing short of disgraceful.

“The fast track sackings at City Link demonstrate the worst elements of casualised Britain, with workers denied even basic rights to proper consultation.  This can’t go on.”

The ATUC has issued a press release and will now send messages of support to the RMT union and all its members affected by the sackings.

 

Join the picket at Mcdonalds against zero hour contracts

Aberdeen Trades Union Council will be lending support to the bakers union, The Bakers, Food and Allied Worker's Union( BFAWU) in their campaign against zero hours contracts.

ATUC's Gerry McCabe said, "Following their success at the Hovis Factory in Wigan, they are coming to Aberdeen to continue their campaign on Wednesday 29th October and Thursday 30th.  

"Activity is being kicked off by a picket of McDonald's in Union Street on the 29th between 4.00p.m. and approximately 7.00p.m. On Thursday there will be pickets at KFC and Burger King.  The details of the second days activity have yet to be firmed up and any suggestions would be more than welcome.  

"We hope to have the ATUC banner at these events and I would urge as many of our affiliates as possible to come along.  If you can make it along then we will see you at 4.00p.m. on the 29th."
