Online event with Fayik Yagizay HDP, Scottish Solidarity with Kurdistan, the STUC, and Scottish Trades Councils.

The HDP is the third largest party in the Turkish Parliament and stands for peace, democracy, and ecology and for the rights of women, workers, and minorities. The more support it has gained, the more it has been under attack.

6,000 party members are in prison, including elected MPs and mayors and the former party co-chairs, and many thousands more have been detained by the police. Most of the HDP mayors elected in 2019 have been removed, and immunity is being lifted from more MPs so that they can join those already in prison. Now the party is threatened with total closure.

This has been accompanied by an ever-wider clampdown on freedoms within Turkey, and an aggressive foreign policy that threatens the whole region. The huge crowds that came out for Newroz, the Kurdish New Year that has become a festival of resistance, demonstrated people’s mass support for the HDP, and their resilience, but international support is more important than ever.

We will look at what is happening and how we can show practical solidarity with the HDP and all those struggling for democracy and against fascism in Turkey.
